Children and the internet: keeping curiosity safe
The internet can be a wonderful place for children to learn, create and explore. But games, videos and messages can also bring risks. A little guidance from trusted adults helps children build safer habits from an early age.
Explore together
Take an interest in the apps, games and videos your child enjoys. Choose age-appropriate content, check privacy settings and use parental controls where available. These tools help, but they do not replace supervision and regular conversations.
Keep the conversation open
Remind children not to share personal details such as their address, school or passwords. Someone they meet online may not be who they claim to be. If anything feels upsetting, confusing or unsafe, encourage them to stop and tell a trusted adult. Reassure them that asking for help will not get them into trouble.
Make room for offline adventures
Agree a routine that suits your child’s age and needs, with plenty of time for outdoor play, books, friendships and rest. Putting devices away during meals and before bedtime can help make space for connection and calm.
